Morning (10 AM – 12 PM): Preparing the Surface and Plaster
Introduction to Fresco Painting
- Historical and technical overview of fresco painting.
- Explanation of materials: arriccio (base layer), intonaco (final layer), pigments, and tools.
Surface Preparation
- Application of the first layer of plaster (arriccio).
- Drying process and time management for working with fresh plaster.
Transferring the Drawing
- Choosing a model: portrait from a photo, a copy, or a drawing.
- Preparing the cartoon (formatting to 20×20 cm, grid method, or pouncing).
- Transferring the drawing onto the prepared surface.
Lunch Break (12 PM – 12:45 PM)
- On-site. Please bring a snack or sandwich.
Afternoon (12:45 PM – 6 PM): Drawing and Painting on Fresco
Application of Intonaco (Final Plaster Layer)
- Key steps to achieve a high-quality result.
- Smoothing and preparing the damp surface for painting.
Painting Process
- Introduction to natural pigments and their dilution.
- Demonstration and application of colors on the fresh intonaco.
- Working on shadows and volumes to bring the portrait to life.
- Managing time: the importance of painting quickly before the plaster dries.
At the end of the workshop, you will leave with your own completed fresco and a thorough understanding of this ancient technique. A fully immersive day to explore a new approach to portraiture and enrich your artistic practice.
Materials
The essential materials are included (support, pigments, etc.), but you will need to bring a few brushes to create your portrait.
During this workshop, you will create a fresco inspired by a portrait, whether it’s from a photo, a copy, or an original drawing. Please print your image at 20×20 cm at home. If you’d like to work with a different theme, register using the form and then send us your variant for approval.
Pricing and Participation
The workshop fee is 150€, with a reduced price of 130€ for students (upon presentation of a valid student ID).
Payment Terms
- A 50% deposit is required to reserve your spot (via bank transfer, non-refundable).
- The remaining 50% is due on the day of the workshop (by check or in cash).
